Bike Workshops

We are continuing to host free ‘Do it Together’ bike maintenance workshops in The Space in 2010. These are being run by local volunteers who are experienced bike repairers / makers and are happy to pass their skills on to others – if you are able to offer sessions (including evenings) to keep this programme growing, please get in touch.
Next Session dates / times available:
Thurs May 6th – 9am (available) 10am (available) 11am (available)
Thurs May 27th – 9am (2 slots available) 10am (2 slots available) 11am (2 slots available)
BOOKINGS
To make a booking, email us stating the day & time you’d prefer, and please include your mobile number for ease of contact. It is a good idea to suggest a couple of dates / times in case your first choice is not available.
Do It Together – What & Why?
It’s like DIY but with a bit more togetherness. Skill swapping, sharing, getting together and learning new skills.
Who are the DIT bike sessions for?
Anyone who wants to know a bit more about their bike; if you are unsure about what to look for and what maintenance your bike needs and want to keep it in a safe condition; if you are having mechanical problems with your bike and want too know why and not just hand over a wad of cash for someone else to fix it.
How do the DIT bike sessions work?
At the moment you book an hour long session, a volunteer goes through the bike with you, checks the state of the parts and makes sure the bike is safe. If you wish, minor alterations can be made e.g. adjust brakes and gears, change brake pads, and possibly cables if time permits. If other work needs to be done we’ll write down what it is, and give guidance about parts etc. You can also book another session to get further work done. Rather than just watching while the work is done for you, you’ll be taking part and learning how to use the tools and how to carry out the adjustments for yourself in future.
Does it cost anything?
This is a voluntary project that is not funded. The trainers donate their time, the Bristol Green Store hosts the sessions for free in The Space, & the use of tools is free. If you need brake pads etc. we can sell them to you at a friendly price, although we only have a small selection of parts. We also have a selection of free secondhand parts.
Donations & volunteering
If you’d like to give a donation towards tools etc you can – any donations will go towards the bicycle workshops and other similar projects @ The Space. Usable secondhand parts are also greatly appreciated, however, we do not accept secondhand whole bicycles. If you want to get involved as a trainer, give us a (bicycle) bell!
D.I.T. – more information
This D.I.T. bicycle maintenance project has been inspired by Chris Carlsson (main founder of Critical Mass and revolutionary creative thinker and tinkerer), the Kebele bicycle workshop (Bristol’s finest long-established anarchist bicycle repair, re-use, recycling re-skilling bicycle project), and the millions of people who ride their beat-up bikes as their primary form of transport and all the bicycle projects and wrenches keeping those trusty steeds rolling. It seems like a good time to bring a D.I.T. bicycle project to the Chessels!
